LOCAL NON-PROFIT AWARDS $225,000 TO PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH

TAMPA, FL – July 11, 2006 – The Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF) recently awarded $225,000 in annual seed grants to help fund research to find a cure for pediatric cancer.

PCF announced the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, University of Florida in Gainesville, and All Children’s Research Institute in St. Petersburg as the recipients of the grants, awarded to pediatric oncology researchers focusing their work on finding a cure.

“This is the most exciting and rewarding time of year at the Foundation.  All year long we work to raise funds, and in June we take those dollars and put them to good use in the search for a cure.” said Barbara Rebold, PCF executive director.

PCF has raised its total to more than $2.4 million in seed grants awarded in hopes of eliminating pediatric cancer worldwide.  Seed grants fund research projects at their start and help scientific investigators to begin exploring and proving their theories.

In addition to funding seed grants, this year the Foundation launched The Sunshine Project, a novel collaborative research initiative that has brought together researchers from around the country to work together in fast-tracking new treatments to increase the survival rate for children battling cancer.

The Foundation has made a commitment to spearhead this project over the next three years.  Through its collaborative research infrastructure, The Sunshine Project changes the way pediatric cancer research is conducted in this country.

“By funding these initiatives, the Foundation is helping to fill a significant void in pediatric oncology research,” said Rebold.

The principal investigators from each institution awarded with a seed grant are:

  • Dr. Gary W. Litman, PhD, All Children’s Hospital
Zebrafish As a Model for Identifying Cancer Genes
  • Dr. William G. Kerr, PhD, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute
The Kinomes of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
  • Dr. William B. Slayton, MD, University of Florida in Gainesville

MAY FISHING TOURNAMENT HELPS
“REEL IN THE CURE” FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER

“Tampa’s Speed King” Honored While Funding Research and Hope for Children with Cancer

TAMPA, FL – March 27, 2006 – Fishing enthusiasts will put their lines in the water to help “catch” a cure for pediatric cancer at the Fifth Annual Johnny Ferlita Memorial Fishing Tournament on May 12 – 13, 2006.  The tournament will be held at the Tampa Bayside Marina and will honor “Tampa’s Speed King,” the late Johnny Ferlita.

Anglers will fish Tampa Bay tributaries for Redfish, Snook and Trout during this one-day, catch-and-release tournament.  It all begins Friday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. with a Captain’s Meeting and Dinner Party, featuring the Columbia Restaurant’s famous paella, 1905 salad and sangria.  A fabulous silent auction and the irresistible beat of the Cuban Social Club playing live will kick-off the fifth anniversary of this event.

The fishing begins Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. with everyone returning to the Marina, 5200 W. Tyson Ave., by 3:00 p.m. for judging.  In addition, all participants will enjoy a cookout and awards ceremony after a day on the water.

Ferlita was a native-born Floridian who took full advantage of the waterways in Florida with his enthusiasm for boat racing and fishing.  Aptly referred to as “Tampa’s Speed King of the Waterways,” Ferlita set the World Record for the Florida Family Runabout five mile competitive race at 39.6 miles per hour.

He became part of the U.S. Power Squadron in 1961 and was a member, instructor and past Commander of the Tampa Power Squadron.  Prior to being appointed Chairman of the Board at the Central Bank of Tampa, he spent several years as the head of a family-owned beer distributorship.

“This is a very special year for the Johnny Ferlita Memorial Fishing Tournament as it marks the fifth anniversary of this stellar event.  This event is exceptional as it was born out of one man’s love of the water, and one family’s love of Johnny Ferlita,” said Barbara Rebold, executive director for PCF.  “This fishing tournament celebrates Johnny’s life by doing something he truly enjoyed - fishing, while contributing to a great cause which benefits children with cancer.”

The $200 entry fee for each angler includes two tickets to the Dinner Party and Awards Banquet as well as an angler’s gift bag upon registration.  Guests who do not want to fish, but would like to participate in the fun of the Dinner Party can purchase dinner tickets at $25 per person.

The Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a non-profit, Tampa-based charity, dedicated to funding research to eliminate childhood cancer worldwide.  The Foundation has granted more than $2.2 million to researchers at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa, All Children's Research Institute in St. Petersburg, the University of Florida in Gainesville and the University of Miami, School of Medicine.

Lullaby Album Carries Little Ones on a Journey Around the World to Sweet Sleep
Local Atlanta Vocalist Presents Debut Album and Helps the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer

Tampa, FL - January 10, 2006 – Nestled in their cribs for an afternoon nap or night’s sleep, babies can now drift off to sweet slumber to soothing lullabies from around the world with the newly released album Sleep, Little One by Debra McDavid. The compact disc album debuts today and features ten traditional lullabies from various cultural origins including Irish, German, Latin American and Japanese. A portion of the proceeds from each album sold will be donated to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

“Sleep, Little One has been a vision of mine for quite some time,” said Debra McDavid. “I have been performing in front of live audiences for years. Some of my most special audiences have been children and I have seen first hand how they respond to music. It has been a special gift to make an album for children, which will benefit children.”

McDavid, a native of Texas and current resident of Atlanta, Ga., holds a Master of Music Degree from Yale University and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Texas. She made her international debut in Oviedo, Spain, as the featured soloist with the Orquesta Sinfonica Del Principado De Asturias, singing Benjamin Britten’s Les Illumination, and was hailed “an American soprano of exquisite musicianship and of unquestionable expressive elegance” (La Nueva Espana). In addition to performing regularly at festival concerts and teaching a series of masterclasses in Brazil, McDavid has sung leading roles with Central City Opera, Denver Symphony, Liederkranz Opera in New York City, Yale University and the Shubert Theatre in Connecticut and the University of North Texas.

Drawing from a background in both opera and musical theatre, McDavid presents yet another side of her singing ability. McDavid shows her vocal diversity on Sleep, Little One by singing in a soft, folk-like style with hush tones that are the perfect compliment for lullabies.

McDavid’s Sleep, Little One takes listeners on a voyage around the globe through the following song selections:
1. Manx Lullaby – Isle of Mann
2. Suliram – Indonesian
3. The Garten Mother’s Lullaby – Irish
4. Tum-Balalayka – Yiddish
5. Sleep, Sleep Little One – Japanese
6. Brahm’s Lullaby – German
7. Duermete Niño Lindo – Latin America
8. All the Pretty Little Horses – American
9. Winkum, Winkum – German
10. Sleep, Baby, Sleep – German

The album features Richard Aspinwall, a two-time Grammy-winning producer and engineer whose work has sold over 50 million copies. Also featured keyboardist and arranger Dan Steenson, who has been the pianist for various organizations including the Eastman Opera Theatre, Brevard Music Center’s Summer Opera Program, Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Georgia State University Singers, and the Boy Choir of the Carolinas. String accompaniment is provided by Debra’s husband, Tom McDavid, violinist/violist.

In addition to eliciting sweet slumber, Sleep, Little One will help fund research and hope for children with cancer. McDavid is donating a portion of the album’s proceeds to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization that has funded over $2.2 Million in research grants to leading institutions including St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, All Children’s Research Institute, University of Florida and University of Miami, School of Medicine. The mission of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation is to fund childhood cancer research until a cure is found for this devastating disease.

As the perfect gift for baby showers, newborn arrivals or christenings, the compact disc album is available for $15 at www.debramcdavid.com.
